Billy Leach is 54 years old and has
been in the retail archery business for 26 years, during that time
he had been working on his life dream to make his own bows, just as
he had when he was a young boy back home in South Arkansas. Leach
Custom Bows is a young Company of only 2 years full time and having
made bows parttime while working at BP/ Amoco 31 1/2 years.
Having worked in a Chemical
Company and dealing with quality day in and day out, you know that
a satisfied customer is a happy customer. Not just saying satisfied
but having a product that meets my specifications as well as what
the customer wants. Certified under the ISO 9001 & 2 Quality system
meant meeting specified requirements within a specified time and a
specified product. All that means Quality or it does not go out the
door. I was known for my, if it is not good enough for Billy Leach
to use I would not have or sell it in my shop. That carries over to
my Bows if it is not what I would use then I will not sell it.
"If it's
not good enough for me, it's not good enough to sell"
Leach Bows go thru a
step by step process of procedures when the material arrives at our
shop to determine it's quality. Each piece of glass is spine tested
and marked. This is a step which is critical to the one limb being
more weight than the other. By using the same glass on opposing limbs
the weight is exact. This is also done by micrometers to verify the
thickness of the glass, carbon or core material and laminations which
go into each bow we make. These are written down and kept for future
use. If the material does not meet our highest standards, we return
it to the vendor.
Well I have said we several
times lets get this clear just who we is... My son Bryon Goodwill
and My wife Debbie. I could not do this without them and they are
a part of this as much as I am. Bryon doing the testing and sketching
and glueing and grinding and Debbie handling all the paperwork whether
it is the Billing, Paying or keeping the records for the Business.
Back to what you want
to know about each bow is a special piece of work and is made one
at a time by hand , with the help of some special equipment we had
to make to help eliminate some of the hand work. But it also makes
the exact shape each time to a degree until we start shaping and sanding.
There are some high quality
factory bows out there, but they do not meet everyone's personal specifications
and bow weight, bow length or draw length. These things are what makes
a Truly Custom Bow. A bow that fits you at your draw length and at
the weight you require, with the features you want and your choice
of materials. What wood you want,
color glass whether you want carbon or not any special things like
inserts or name on the bow, overlays, all that make a custom bow and
it feels good and shoots where you are looking.
Factory Bows are at 28"
you will see the weight. But if you are short and cannot pull that
much you do not have that weight bow, or if you pull more than 28
the weight may be too much. We make the bow to fit your draw at the
weight you want. So this makes it feel like an extension of you when
you pull back on that target whether it be a stump or 3D target or
Real Animal.
Leach Bows whether it
is a Takedown Recurve, or Takedown Longbow or One Piece Longbow, are
smooth, exceptionally fast and virtually no hand shock! I know everyone
says that but our customers say that and that is what counts. Oh I
forgot to mention unbelievably quiet!
When starting out with
a Traditional Bow there are things to remember and forget that macho
I need an 70# bow. A traditional bow you will not pull as far as when
using a compound if you shot one. Also you should shoot roughly 10
to 15 lbs of bow weight less to start with. There is different muscle's
used and you do not have any let off and when you are setting and
it is cold or you have a lot of clothing on you may not be able to
pull your bow back. The draw is usually one to two inches shorter
than with a compound, you measure to the front of the bow which is
1 3/4" in front of the throat of the grip, or true draw.
Besides every traditional
bow manufacture will tell you these same things. So please get measured
and get your draw and weight reasonable, Leach Bows will shoot faster
than some of the older compounds of yesterday with todays materials,
and when you use carbon it really makes a nice bow.
